In the highlands of Guatemala the process of giving birth is called Dar la Luz, which literally means “to give the light.” Despite its poetic name, giving birth has often been a challenging, even life-threatening event for indigenous women; Guatemala ranks third in infant and maternal mortality in the Western world.
