The healthcare needs of the local Mayan population can be overwhelming. When a mother has a sick baby she must often take a boat across the lake to a clinic. She must pay for both transportation and treatment at the clinic. Because the people often subsist on very little, a sick child or other family member can destabilize the family, sending them further into a cycle of poverty with very little hope of recovery.
Clinicas Maya operates on the belief that basic healthcare is not only a right of all people, but a necessity for the growth and prosperity of the whole community.
The general health program at Clinicas Maya includes:
• Women’s health
• Gastritis and other digestive illnesses
• Arthritis
• Minor injuries
• Diabetes
• Respiratory illnesses
• Skin disorders
• Acupuncture
• Preventive care, including blood pressure management, stress reduction, joint health and nutrition education
